Wood Stoves
Home >>
Wood Stoves are still the most popular, easy to operate, and very economical way to heat your house. It may not be the cheapest as the cost of burning wood keep rising, but definitely compatible with gas, wood pellets, and especially electricity. There're different types of designs of wood stoves and they can differ as well in structural and combustion ways. Efficiency of burning wood in wood stoves is not highest (about 60-70%), but later more contemporary models have more efficient heat outputs.
Wood stoves can come as standalone units or build-in inserts also called wood burning fireplaces. There're some types that can be mounted on a wall or plugged-in into an existing opening of an older fireplace. Wood stoves usually can be installed almost in any location of your house, but placing it in the central location of the house with a flue pipe running straight up (with no bending) proved to be better option for heating your house than having corner or side locations or having bent flue pipes.
There're several aspects of structural designs of wood stoves, but they're more of your preference than of real functional use. For example, there is no much difference whether your stove has a cast-iron or steel plated construction or whether it's got an enamelled or painted finish. Most of the wood stoves are shielded on the bottom and from the rear, but some models are shielded on all sides. That usually prevents heating of a stove outside and reduces the heat loss as well. Fully shielded stoves may be better options for smaller rooms and spaces.
Even though design of the wood stoves haven't changed much for the past hundred years, the way they burn the wood have changed quite a lot in the past 15 years in order to meat new requirements for smoke emission. Contemporary wood stoves generally come in to two combustion designs: catalytic and non-catalytic. Catalytic wood stoves usually provide long, even heat output, but they're more complicated in operating, require more maintenance, and not as reliable as non-catalytic. Hence, you will find more non-catalytic wood stoves available then catalytic ones.
